Annual garage sale helps Clark County Special Olympics athletes

Springfield News-Sun - 8/3/2018

Aug. 03--Local athletes' chances of attending the Special Olympics are threatened if enough money is not raised at an annual garage sale.

The 22nd Clark County Special Olympics Garage Sale opened Thursday and runs through noon Saturday.

The event raises money to pay for the entry fees, equipment and uniforms for the Clark County Special Olympic athletes.

The sale includes clothes, toys, furniture, kitchen and bath items, furniture, books, pictures, and shoes. Clothes are sold by the bag full and the bags are provided, according to organizers.

People donate items all year for it, said garage sale organizers.

This garage sale is different in another way. The buyer negotiates the price they will pay for an item. Fundraisers like this allowed the team to send dozens of athletes to this past year's games.

"I seem to remember the number ... of over $150 a person that we take to summer games. We took 75, I think this year," Cindy Lewis, an organizer and coach for the Clark County Special Olympics team, said.

The garage sale raised about $4,600 last year.

"It's a way for our kids, some of them are 50 or 60 years-old, but they can participate in sports. When they were kids, a lot of them could not participate in sports," Lewis said.

The sale will continues today from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon to the general public at the Clark County Developmental Disabilities gymnasium, 2335 Kenton St.

On Monday, the fundraiser will be open to people associated with the developmental disabilities field such as clients, staff and providers from 9 a.m.to 4 p.m. and on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon.

The team's next event, Bowl-a-thon, is at Victory Lanes in Springfield. It will be Saturday, Aug. 11. The price is $ 6 for two hours and there will be door prizes.
